The Marathon Training Plan I Used to BQ

I'm sorry I've forgotten to post the link to the marathon training plan I used to qualify for the Boston Marathon. I actually used this plan for my last 4 marathons and have had great success, setting new PRs every time.

For Boston '08 I wanted to peak at 70 miles per week, and I needed to do several weeks of build up to get there. I added mileage in the form of more warm up and cooldown miles to the hard workout days, and added a couple of miles here and there onto the easy/recovery run days. I also added an additional running day to take me up to 6 days instead of 5.

Please keep in mind that I was able to make the switch to higher mileage after almost 2 years of getting accustomed to just under 60 miles per week. So don't do anything crazy! Build slowly, run smart, follow the recommendations of the plan and when you feel like it's not challenging enough anymore, tweak it (but stick to the basics of it).

I love the training plan and am nervous about going to something different, but at least I will have a coach who will tell me what to do and listen to me when I am not feelin' it.

Anyway, the plan I used is from Runner's World online (www.runnersworld.com) and it's called Your Ultimate Marathon Training Plan. There is a beginning, intermediate and advanced plan. I did the advanced plan. Happy running! I hope to see you in Boston.

If my brother qualifies for Boston at the CIM in December, then I for sure will go back and run Boston again in '09! Go, bro!!!

I can't wait to see a RR for your 50K! I am thinking about doing one in October, but no trails for me, all pavement. Good luck to you!

Glad you posted your training plan, never seen those before. I like the hill element to it, that is probably good for Boston.

Hi, I have really enjoyed your blog!

I am happy you shared your marathon training plan- looks tough! I am wondering how to run a fast half marathon- what is your training plan for that????

I just ran a 1:42 recently but was hoping to go under 1:40 if not 1:37... do you have any suggestions???

also so you do any special training for a 5K??

Thank you :)

Hi Chris, I didn't use a specific plan for the half-marathon in March. I was in the midst of marathon training when I ran it, and the results came from training for 26.2. :)

P.S. I'm hoping to better my 5K time this summer and will be doing a lot more short intervals to improve leg speed (in addition to 50-60 mpw).
