Not a race race, but a run within a race

Ran the Humboldt Half Marathon this weekend, but coming off of nearly 3 weeks of sickness with hardly any running let alone training... I was 10:00 slower than my PR. The course really does feel down hill both ways because of the towering, dense growth of redwood trees on both sides of the road.

Did not have a Garmin, nor a watch. Decided to try to keep it as easy as possible without jogging and ended up running a few seconds slower than my Marathon PR pace. Finished in good health without any signs of sickness in 1:39:08. I did not get passed by anybody in the last half, and I passed a lot of people. That part felt great!

I'll get my fitness back someday, but lately it's been one setback after another. Bleh.

The prizes for 2nd and 3rd in age group were bottles of Red Tail Ale. Of course I received NO prize, but I pilfered the prize beer off my friends. Team mate Lindsay won the women's division in 1:21. WOW!!!

And one cool tidbit: The American Record for Females 70-74 was set on the course yesterday... Barbara Miller of Modesto, CA, age 70, ran 1:47.

It truly IS one thing after another for you. Hang in there! You ran a great race, definitely nothing to hang your head about. Keep doing what you're doing. You'll get back.

Hi GB,

Glad to hear you are feeling better and getting your strength back. Seems like a pretty good performance considering your recent illness! Is this the same course where they do Avenue of the Giants?

Take care and keep up the good work!

Hang in there GB. I'm coming back from a nasty sickness myself, and the running has taken a huge hit also, so I understand what you are going through. I like the no watch in the race. Might try that one day.

Hi! If you were aiming for GMP, then how is this a setback? You felt good the whole way, right? Did you WANT to race it harder, but feel like you shouldn't for some reason? Just curious b/c you said you hit your GMP within seconds. Was that not what you were aiming for? BTW, your pics are ADORABLE!

Thanks everyone!

Rebecca, I did want to race it at whatever full effort I could muster, but I chose not to just to be cautious about relapsing into sickness again. Since Sept. 20 I have been sick off and on with flu symptoms. I'd feel better and go out and run long and be sick again for the next 4 days. That cycle kept repeating. And unfortunately as I type this, I have a new cold (or is it just lingering from the original sickness???). I don't know.

1:39:xx... You are SOOOOOOOO slow!! J/K. U know I think that's an awesome time!! Dont even start to compare to your PR... u were healthy back then, had a trainer to kick u in the rear end daily and you were a year younger! I'm still gonna secretly have u pace me during CIM... lol. Then we can have the REAL race at the end!!!!! *devilish smirk*
